Samsara Vins is a project launched by ambitious winemakers in Catalonia to express the character of Priorat in a more approachable way. Mainly blended with Garnacha and Carinena harvested from old vines with deep roots in the harsh Llicorella (slate and quartz) soils of steep terraced costers and a dry Mediterranean climate in the rain shadow of the Montsant mountains. It is a modern Priorat masterpiece where the vibrant acidity brought by intense diurnal temperature variation and the profound mineral sensation derived from black slate beautifully merge.

  • The soil is usually a single horizon, low in organic matter, formed mainly by the breakdown of slate, called llicorella here; bedrock lies about 10–15 cm below the surface. It drains quickly and holds little water.
  • The bedrock is made of Devonian and Carboniferous slates, the Palaeozoic slates of the hills that make up the Priorat.
  • Many Priorat vineyards are on steep slopes and terraces: gradients exceed 15% in most vineyards and reach 60% in some.
  • The vineyards lie between 100 and 750 m of elevation.

Expert commentary

The appearance shows a deep ruby color, and powerful aromas of blackberry, ripe plum, and dried herbs spread. On the palate, concentrated fruit flavors along with a firm acidity and powerful tannins form the structure, leading to a long finish accompanied by slate-like minerality.

Serving and ageing guide

Samsara Vins' Samsara Priorat 2021 exhibits an excellent balance supported by rich alcohol, abundant fruit, fine-grained powerful tannins, and fresh acidity. Both aroma and flavor intensities are medium-plus or higher, uniting black fruits, spice, and characteristic Llicorella minerality, with a more than satisfactory finish length. Although currently dominated by youthful fruit and oak notes with tertiary aging aromas undeveloped, the quality can be assessed as very good. While the youthful concentration can be enjoyed powerfully at present, the robust structure also provides ample aging potential. It can be enjoyed now, but an additional 3 to 7 years of bottle aging will allow the development of further complexity. When enjoying, serve at 16-18°C and allow 30-45 minutes of decanting after opening to soften any rigidity. It forms a magnificent pairing with roast lamb or herb-infused beef stew.
