Two Priorat wines on this site, Samsara 2021 and Primitiu de Bellmunt 2019, show how much a wine's name can say about place within one appellation.

The background that matters

The vineyards of the DOQ Priorat lie between about 100 m (the lower parts of Bellmunt del Priorat and El Molar) and 750 m (La Morera de Montsant, Porrera), on slopes mostly steeper than 15% and reaching 60% on some estates. The soils are shallow, formed mainly from the breakdown of llicorella, a brittle slate. Garnacha and Cariñena are the recommended red varieties; others, such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, are permitted.

Read it alongside this wine

Samsara blends Garnacha and Cariñena with smaller shares of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards in four villages. Primitiu de Bellmunt is qualified by the DOQ as a Vi de Paratge, the category for wine from a single delimited site, and comes from Els Molins, with vines over 100 years old. Samsara's radar shows medium(+) acidity and tannin with full body and high alcohol.

Try it with the review

Samsara's aroma tiers include a mineral group: treat it as a tasting term, not as proof that slate can be tasted. Then open Primitiu de Bellmunt's page and list what its name tells you about place that Samsara's does not.

Schematic block diagram, not to scale: the top shows the relief and the front face a cross-section, coloured by soil and rock type.

  • The soil is usually a single horizon, low in organic matter, formed mainly by the breakdown of slate, called llicorella here; bedrock lies about 10–15 cm below the surface. It drains quickly and holds little water.
  • The bedrock is made of Devonian and Carboniferous slates, the Palaeozoic slates of the hills that make up the Priorat.
  • Many Priorat vineyards are on steep slopes and terraces: gradients exceed 15% in most vineyards and reach 60% in some.
  • The vineyards lie between 100 and 750 m of elevation.
