The background that matters
The recommended red varieties of the DOQ Priorat are Garnacha and Cariñena; Syrah is among the others permitted, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon. Finding Syrah in a Priorat wine is therefore a producer’s choice within the rules, not a requirement of the appellation.
Read it alongside this wine
Samsara is led by Garnacha and Cariñena, with smaller shares of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, and is aged for twelve months in oak barrels and egg-shaped vessels. Its published 2021 profile records a deep ruby colour and five aroma groups — red fruit, black fruit, herbal, mineral and oak — which describe the whole blend, not Syrah on its own.
Try it with the review
Sort the five aroma groups into those a stated production step can account for (oak) and those that remain open. Then note what you would need — the 2021 proportions, or a single-variety Syrah to compare — before crediting any of them to Syrah.
