Expert commentary

The 2017 Calon-Ségur exhibits quintessential Saint-Estèphe character through refined blackcurrant fruit, cedar, and gravelly minerals. Its firm, fine-grained tannins and energetic acidity provide outstanding balance and textural drive.

Serving and ageing guide

This wine achieves outstanding quality through exemplary balance, expressive aromatic complexity, exceptional length, and perfectly matched intensity. The nose displays medium plus intensity with nuanced dark fruit and fine oak spice, which seamlessly agrees with the medium plus flavour intensity on the palate, showing pristine aromatic-to-palatal fidelity. Plentiful ripe fruit and refreshing acidity counterbalance the formidable, gravelly tannic spine, driving toward a persistent finish. In terms of readiness, the wine can drink now but has potential for ageing. Although accessible today following aeration thanks to its fruit clarity, its robust tannic structure and vibrant acid foundation will reward cellaring, allowing tertiary development to deepen gracefully over the next 12 to 15 years. For optimal service, decant for one to two hours and serve at 16 to 18°C. It pairs superbly with roasted rack of lamb crusted with herbs, prime rib of beef, or braised venison.
