Tempranillo

Three wines on this page list Tempranillo, from two Spanish appellations, so the grape can be read against different places and different cellar choices.

The background that matters

Rioja follows the upper Ebro valley, with mainly Atlantic influence in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa and a drier, warmer, Mediterranean-shaped climate in Rioja Oriental. Ribera del Duero lies on the northern plateau along the Duero, where the climate is Mediterranean with marked continental traits and altitudes range from about 720 m to over 1,000 m.

Read it alongside this wine

Protos Crianza is 100% Tempranillo aged twelve months in French and American oak, while Cune Gran Reserva 2017 is 85% Tempranillo with Graciano and Mazuelo, aged 24 months in American and French oak. Cofrade Rioja 2023 is listed as Tempranillo, but its producer, Bodegas del Medievo, makes more than one Cofrade red, so check the label before applying any production detail.

Try it with the review

Open the Protos and Cune reviews and note one difference in colour or development. Before crediting it to the grape, list the other facts that also differ: vintage, appellation, blend and time in oak.

These are learning prompts, not guaranteed tasting results. Separate the published facts from your own observations.
