Mazuelo

Mazuelo is the name used in Rioja for Carignan, and Cune Gran Reserva 2017 shows how small a share it can have in a blend.

The background that matters

Mazuelo is the name used in Rioja for the variety also known as Carignan or Cariñena. It is one of the grape varieties of the DOCa Rioja designation.

Read it alongside this wine

Cune Gran Reserva 2017 is 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, aged for 24 months in American and French oak. At 5%, Mazuelo is a minor component, and its effect cannot be isolated in the finished wine.

Try it with the review

Read acidity and tannin in the review, then list what else could explain them: Tempranillo, Graciano, oak ageing and the vintage. Write one sentence on why a 5% share makes it hard to credit the acidity or tannin to Mazuelo.
