Domaine Jean-Maurice Raffault is an established family estate in Chinon, farming prime vineyard plots across several distinct terroirs along the Vienne river. The cuvée Les Galuches comes from an alluvial plain of sand and gravel, a soil composition known for absorbing daytime heat and draining rapidly. This microclimate fosters early ripening in Cabernet Franc, producing an exceptionally supple, fragrant, and accessible expression of Chinon that highlights aromatic purity and soft structural lines.

Compare the variety named in the source with what you actually smell. A grape name alone does not establish the aromas in a particular glass.

Expert commentary

The wine shows vivid aromas of ripe red fruits, fresh violet petals, and an appetizing touch of leafy graphite. Bright, refreshing acidity is knit seamlessly into gentle tannins, delivering an energetic, juicy palate with immediate charm.

Serving and ageing guide

This wine can drink now but has potential for ageing. Its exuberant primary red fruit and vibrant Loire freshness offer delightful early drinking, yet its balanced acid line will allow it to evolve favorably over the next 3 to 5 years. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 14–16°C to preserve its crisp berry fruit; decanting is optional, though 20 minutes in a carafe can bring forward its delicate floral elements. Pair with roast chicken, rillettes, grilled pork loin, or regional goat cheeses such as Sainte-Maure de Touraine. The wine achieves very good quality through stellar balance and focused intensity. The nose intensity is medium plus with lifted violet and raspberry, which aligns consistently with a medium plus palate intensity of crunchy red cherries and herbs. Its brisk acidity is completely balanced by juicy, ripe fruit and fine, rounded tannins. While it finishes with a clean, medium persistence and shows charming varietal typicity, it lacks the tertiary depth and expansive structural weight that would elevate it to outstanding status.
