The background that matters
Kanonkop is a fourth-generation family estate at the foot of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch; its first wines under its own label, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Pinotage, came from the 1973 vintage. The Kadette label was created in the mid-1980s as a junior range, when newly planted vines were not yet considered mature enough for the main label.
Read it alongside this wine
The origin of the 2024 is Stellenbosch, so do not assume the fruit comes from the estate’s own Simonsberg slopes. It uses bush vines aged 7 to 40 years, open concrete fermenters with mechanical punch-downs, and 12 months in second- and third-fill French oak. The published profile records high alcohol; medium(+) acidity, tannin and body; and red fruit, black fruit, spice and oak among its aroma groups.
Try it with the review
In the review, separate how much tannin there is from how it feels, and see how acidity and fruit balance the high alcohol. An oak aroma group does not tell you whether the barrels were new or used: that detail comes from the factsheet, not from the glass.
