The background that matters
Ironstone Vineyards is run by the Kautz family, and its winery and tasting destination are in Murphys, in California’s Sierra Foothills. This Zinfandel, however, carries the Lodi appellation: the Rous Vineyard is about ten acres of head-trained vines in Lodi’s Mokelumne River sub-appellation, planted in 1909 on St. George rootstock.
Read it alongside this wine
Maison lists the featured wine as Rous Vineyard Old Vine Reserve Zinfandel 2022, while the producer’s 2022 Rous bottling is named “Rous Ancient Vine Zinfandel”, so confirm the label before applying cuvée details such as oak ageing. Vine age and training are context, not a prediction of taste.
Try it with the review
When you taste the wine, or read its review where one is available, note acidity, tannin, alcohol and body separately. Then ask whether “old vines” actually explains any of them, or whether it remains an assumption.
Learning prompts are not guaranteed tasting results; distinguish producer facts from your observations.
