Biodynamic calendar 2026: fruit, root, flower and leaf days
What the evidence says
Effects on wine taste are not scientifically established.
In a blind tasting published in PLOS ONE in 2017, 19 New Zealand wine professionals tasted 12 Pinot Noir wines on fruit days and on root days. The type of day did not systematically influence any of the wine characteristics they rated.

Fruit, root, flower and leaf days
A biodynamic calendar gives each day one of four types from the Moon’s position in the zodiac. The notes below describe traditional associations, not established effects.
Fruit day
Moon in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius.
Traditionally associated with fruit expression. Use this guide to notice ripeness, aroma, and generosity in the glass.
Root day
Moon in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn.
Traditionally associated with structure and earth. Use this guide to focus on texture, tannin, mineral impressions, and cellar planning.
Flower day
Moon in Gemini, Libra or Aquarius.
Traditionally associated with aroma and finesse. Use this guide to explore floral detail, lift, and elegance.
Leaf day
Moon in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces.
Traditionally associated with freshness and growth. Use this guide to focus on acidity, herbal notes, vitality, and balance.
How this calendar is calculated
For each date, the Moon’s position is computed from its mean orbital elements, a simplified model without perturbation terms. Its ecliptic longitude is read in the tropical zodiac, divided into twelve signs of 30°.
The sign the Moon is in at noon gives the day type: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius give fruit days; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn root days; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius flower days; Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces leaf days.
Each date gets one type, from the Moon’s position at noon. A change of sign later in the day is not shown, and dates close to a change can differ from calendars that use a more detailed lunar model.
Time zones
The tables on this page use 12:00 UTC for every date. The live calendar uses noon in your device’s time zone, so a date close to a change of sign can show a different type there.
For example, in 2026 noon in Tokyo (UTC+9) gives a different type from 12:00 UTC on 53 dates.

Frequently asked questions
What are fruit, root, flower and leaf days?
They are the four day types of a biodynamic calendar, set by the Moon’s position in the zodiac. Each type is traditionally associated with a different aspect of wine; fruit days, for example, with fruit expression. These are traditional associations, not established effects.
Does the day type change how wine tastes?
This is not scientifically established. In a blind tasting published in PLOS ONE in 2017, 19 New Zealand wine professionals tasted 12 Pinot Noir wines on fruit days and on root days, and the type of day did not systematically influence any of the wine characteristics they rated.
Is this the Maria Thun calendar?
No. It is a reference guide calculated by Maison Apéro, not the official Maria Thun calendar.
How is the calendar calculated?
For each date, Maison Apéro computes the Moon’s position at noon from its mean orbital elements, without perturbation terms, and reads its sign in the tropical zodiac. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius give fruit days; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn root days; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius flower days; Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces leaf days.
Which time zone does the calendar use?
The tables on this page use 12:00 UTC. The live calendar uses noon in your device’s time zone, so a date close to a change of sign can show a different type.
