French vineyard trials show ways to reduce pesticide use, with limits

In French vineyard trials, integrated pest management and a strategy targeting zero residues reduced the treatment frequency index by an average of 32.1% and 42.2% against the HEV reference. Results from biocontrol alone were less reliable.

The treatment frequency index, or TFI, accounts for application frequency and dose; these percentages do not measure a reduction in pesticide weight. The findings are not a promise of the same reduction on every vineyard.

Published on 28 October 2026, the study followed 19 growers in southwestern France during 2021–2022. Most tested approaches controlled disease, limited yield losses and lowered fungicide costs, but the biocontrol-only approach was inconsistent. Larger trials across regions, varieties and years are needed. The reporting time shown here belongs to Wine Headlines, not the experiment or the paper's precise publication time.
