UK announces 4.55% alcohol duty increase from February 2027
On 28 October 2026, the UK government announced that alcohol duty rates, including those applying to wine, will rise by 4.55% in line with RPI from 1 February 2027. The announcement also expands relief for qualifying small producers.
A rise in duty is not the same as a uniform rise in shelf prices. The effect on what consumers pay depends on whether and how businesses pass on the tax change. The announced rates are due to apply in February 2027; they are not already in force.
Small Producer Relief has separate eligibility rules, including an alcohol strength below 8.5% ABV. The additional support should therefore not be read as a general discount for wines of ordinary table-wine strength. The source gives the announcement and planned effective date separately.
